Visitor Visa

Visitor visa is a common term used in place of temporary resident visa (TRV). If you are considering visiting Canada for the purposes of traveling, touring, vacationing, visiting friends and family for a short period of time, you may need to apply for a visitor visa before entering Canada. If you are from one of the visitor visa exempt countries (e.g. Australia, Korea, etc), you do not need a visitor visa but still need a eTA if you fly to or transit through Canada. Only a small group of people like US citizens are exempt from both a visitor visa and an eTA for the purpose of visiting Canada.

There are 4 types of visitor visa/TRV:

• Multiple-entry visa (MEV): to facilitate multiple entries to Canada for up to 6 months per entry. The maximum validity period can be up to 10 year or up to the expiry of your passport.

• Single-entry visa (SEV): to allow a single entry into Canada for up to 6 months. It’s for the purpose of attending a one-time event.

• Transit visa: for those who needs a TRV to enter and travel through Canada to another country. You may stay in Canada for up to 48 hours with a transit visa.

• Super visa: a multiple-entry visa for parents or grandparents of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. Please refer to the “Super visa” article for more details.

Although it might seem easy to assemble a visitor visa application, a few key factors impact the outcome of your application profoundly:

• your intention of the visit,

• ties with your home country,

• financial standing,

• immigration status,

• economic conditions of your home country and etc.
